Designed in an aerodynamic bent body, the Flextreme GT/E abstraction is able to accomplish a projected annoyance co-efficient of aloof 0.22, allowance it ability a 200 km/h-plus top acceleration as able-bodied as conserve activity and extend active range. This enables the car to action aught CO2 active emissions.

long Opel Flextreme GT/E concept 'five-door coupe'

A conceptual study that demonstrates how General Motors' extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV) technology can be utilized in larger and more stylish cars than the Chevy Volt and its European twin, the Opel Ampera, will be the star of the German brand's stand at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

"The Flextreme GT/E concept shows the shape of things to come from Opel," says Frank Weber, Vice President, Corporate and Product Planning. "Bold, expressive and highly efficient, it represents the product strategy we will apply to all our future vehicles, large and small, across all market segments."

Described by Opel as a 'five-door coupe', the 4.7-meter (185-in.) long Flextreme GT/E concept that adopts the new Meriva's rear-hinged rear doors also illustrates a further development of the firm's current design language as seen on the Insignia, Astra and Meriva.

>But there's more than meets the eye about the concept model's design as the car achieves a projected drag co-efficient of just 0.22 helping it reach a 200 km/h-plus top speed as well as conserve energy and extend its driving range.

Stand-out features include a pair of retractable spoilers hidden behind each rear wheel-arch that extend out 350-mm at speeds over 50 km/h or 31mph to guide high-speed airflow around the rear corners of the car, further reducing the amount of turbulence.

Opel Flextreme GT/E

With a fully charged battery, the Flextreme has an operating range of 55 kilometers when running purely on electrical power, and only requires a standard 220 V mains socket to recharge the battery in around three hours. Commuters in Europe have an average commute of less than 50 kilometers, so if they were to charge the car up overnight and during the day, they could drive over 100 km each day without producing any CO2 emissions. “Commutes to major city-centers in Europe will do nothing but grow more challenging in the future, ",” says Robert A. Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, Global Product Development, “and we see E-Flex vehicles as an elegant solution for commuters.” Bob Lutz sees the Opel Flextreme Concept vehicle as “a natural for the Opel brand in Europe, where it has long been known for technological innovation and strong design.”
The E-Flex system is not just a vision of GM – it is already fully integrated into product development. It enables different propulsion systems to be fitted into one uniform chassis with electric propulsion. Fuel cells or bioethanol/diesel engines can also be fitted as secondary propulsion units depending on what energy source is readily available in the driver’s area.

The timetable for series production is closely tied to the development of key technologies, such as high-performance lithium-ion batteries. E-Flex Chief Engineer Frank Weber is confident about its further development: “We fully intend to bring this technology to market,” says Weber. “we’re increasingly confident that our strategic battery partners will be able to deliver a production-ready battery in the near future.” . . . more including specifications

Chevrolet's Craig Cheetham said: "The timing and location was perfect for us to launch the new Cruze hatchback. Both Chevrolet and Cadillac will launch two key models next year: the former the new Malibu mid-size sedan (in early 2012) and the Spark minicar (at a later date), and the latter the new ATS compact sedan and the XTS full size sedan in the second half of the year.

Last, but not least, GM also plans to launch its next generation of full-size pickup trucks and SUVs in 2013 and 2014.

2013 Malibu from Chevrolet cars

Understandably, the design process becomes more complicated in the event that the car is a global model like the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, which will be offered in nearly 100 countries on six continents, including the U.S. where it will arrive in showrooms next year.

GM says that the 2013 Malibu seats were created with input from engineers and designers around the world. However, the initial design was made by the Detroit firm's European team, with engineers from North America and Asia making the necessary changes to meet consumer requirements in their respective regions.

Among those tasked with the role of enhancing the seats for the North American market 2013 Malibu are seat performance engineers Daniel Cohen and Cheryl Hajciar.

Cohen, who works at General Motors’ testing facility in Milford, says that the company utilizes a special digital pressure-mapping technology to scan the rear-end impressions of people of all shapes and sizes, with a rear-end machine simulating the tests on the seats.
